We at Llandeilo Primary have already begun to experience the benefits of an allotment and orchard. The children have been experiencing first hand where their food comes from and what is involved in the growing, harvesting and preparing of fruit and vegetables.

When the idea was broached for a flock of friendly ex battery hens to be introduced to our school, we soon realised what fantastic learning opportunities would accompany the hens.

The next phase of this project was to prepare the ground and erect a poultry house. A local carpenter came to the rescue and a chicken house and run was quickly erected. The Chair of Governors, Julia Cox, donated the chicken house plus 3 hens.

Some weeks later disaster struck and we lost two out of the three hens to Mr. Fox. Children, staff and governors were devastated. This real life learning curve, although upsetting was in itself an educational experience. We had ‘problem solving’ discussions. Should we not have live animals? It was universally decided that we would soldier on- but security must be tightened.

Again a team of volunteers came and constructed a fox proof enclosure where our new flock of hens will be safe and secure and we can all sleep sound at night! We were then given a beautiful rabbit named Flopsy.

An egg-cellent enterprise!

Our first three hens were fantastic layers and the eggs were used in our cookery lessons. Surplus eggs were sold and/or auctioned. Money raised paid for the upkeep of the animals. Any surplus went towards our sponsored child Safi.

When our new hens start to produce eggs we will set up a stall every Friday. Children will help with the accounts; keeping records of how many eggs collected, sold, how much money taken and what is spent.

Chicken & Rabbit Duties

Flopsy and the Chickens have to be cared for properly therefore a rota of responsibility has been developed. We clean the pets out, keep food and water topped up and collect the eggs. They have to be cared for come rain or shine!
